Lexy Malone

For the Love of Pottery & the Ocean!

Lexy graduated from Tulane University with a BA in art, specializing in Ceramics. Her style has shifted and evolved many times over the years, though almost always focusing on surface design.  She loves the process of throwing forms, discovering the best shapes for different purposes, and creating new ideas for useful pottery that her customers will love.

Moving to Wilmington, NC in 2011, gave her the opportunity to enjoy standup paddling and SUP surfing.  Getting up close with the ocean and waterways has inspired both color and design choices in her work.  These inspirations have contributed to her evolution both as a potter and water-woman!

“I do get a lot of questions about how I make my pottery and create my designs.  First, while I do hand build a few smaller pieces, I throw most of my work on the wheel.  After trimming and finishing the pieces, I apply colored slip (liquid clay in the consistency of a milkshake). Once this dries enough to handle the pieces, I use carving tools to hand carve designs through the slip to the clay below. This process is called “sgraffitto”, and has been used throughout history, particularly in Etruscan and Greek pottery.  There are no stencils used. Once the design is finished, the piece is allowed to dry completely and is then fired, coated in a clear glaze and fired a final time. All of my work is dishwasher and microwave-safe! I use glazes certified safe for dinnerware.”
